Ed Vernassie
(1919-2006)

Ed's Army career spans from WWII, landing in Normandy and fighting with the 99th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge to a high-ranking officer in Vietnam and retirement. For his valor, Ed's citations and ribbons include a purple heart and two bonze stars. He also served in South Vietnam with Vietnamese rank, award, and a citation for learning Vietnamese in Saigon.
Edward F. Vernassie 87, of Indianapolis formerly of Mooresville passed away May 11, 2006. He was born May 11, 1919 in Kansas City, MO to the late Steven J. and Bertha K. Heimburger Vernassie. Ed married Janice L. McElwain on February 14, 1976 in Independence, MO and she preceded him in death on June 19, 2004. He retired in 1974 as a Lt. Colonel after serving thirty years with the U.S. Army, which included duty during WWII and was a Vietnam veteran. After retiring from the Army he was employed with the Kansas City, MO Board of Trade in the Mail Room for ten years. His memberships included Grace Bible Church, American Legion and VFW. Beginning at the age of fifteen he developed into an accomplished artist, which he enjoyed and pursued until his death. Survivors include son Terry F. (Sharon) Vernassie of Olathe, KS; daughter Catherine Lynn Vernassie of Kansas City, MO; grandsons Danny Vernassie, Adam and Bradley Jones; sister Margaret Mary Pelletier of Kansas City, MO, brother William Vernassie of Kansas City, MO. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Linda Sue Jones, son Edward F. Vernassie Jr., brothers George Anthony Vernassie and James Vernassie.
