Walter J. Palmer
Walter has the distinction of being the last Living Fighter Pilot in the Indianapolis area. Born in the Bronx, NY, Walter joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and graduated from Aviation Cadet Training on 6-30-1943 as a Second Lieutenant. The same day he was married to Rosalind Purcell. He was then assigned to the 100th Fighter Squadron, of the 332nd Fighter Group at Selfridges Field in Michigan. His group left for Italy in January 1944 and where they flew P-39 Airacobra's. Three months later, his group was transferred from the 12th Air force to the 15th Air force where they flew P-47's and P-51's. Walter accumulated 158 missions while overseas and shot down one German Messerschmitt 109. After rotating back to the states in 1945, Walter retired from the Army Air Corps 7-8-1945.
